Montessori uses color to help with visual discrimination. Montessori colored tablets were made with colored silk thread. You can make your own by winding thread on wooden spools or wooden cubes. You don't have to use silk thread though! Also, you can purchase spools of thread for matching and grading.
This is a great sensorial activity to do with your preschooler.
