Montessori used sensory education to prepare for math concepts. She introduced shape, size, sorting, patterns, length, weight, and finally counting and number recognition. Sorting is one of the first math type, sensorial activities. It helps to discriminate differences. The pink tower introduces the concept of size and shape. In a broad sense, the smallest cube represents 1, the largest cube represents 10. The red rods show length. The baric tablets refine the concept of weight.
One of the first things you can do with your child is to sort shapes, patterns and objects. It's a great start to math.
